Therapy Horses
The Therapy Horse is a valuable and vital partner in providing this unique and rewarding therapy service to our center's clients. CMTRCI was blessed to have the Norwegian Fjord horse available to partner in providing therapy to the center's clients at the onset of our Therapy Riding program.
Although the build of The Norwegian Fjord Horse varies within the breed, it is typically a wide barreled horse which aides in providing stability for our younger clients and our clients that require a more stable base.
The movement of The Norwegian Fjord Horse varies as well, each individual horse has a different way of going. The physical disability of the rider determines which type of movement would provide the utmost benefit. There can be no Therapy Riding program without safe, reliable, calm, and happy Therapy Horses, because of this, CMTRCI follows NARHA(North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) regulations in determining the work schedule and care for our Therapy Horses. Brette is our oldest working therapy horse but she is still young at heart! After raising her own daughter Lillja to be well minded and respectful, Brette has worked as a therapy horse for the past five years and has proven to be an excellent teacher in patience, assertiveness, and empathy. At only 14.1 hands, her muscular form can be intimidating to young riders, however Brette is a kind, gentle horse that has a gift of making anyone feel comfortable around her. If you are interested in sponsoring Brette, see information below. Chico is everyone's favorite. Chico is not only the tallest of the herd, standing at 15.1, he is also the only non-Fjord! Since we have all had the experience at one point in our lives of feeling "different", we all can relate to Chico! If you would like to sponsor Chico, see the information below. Lillja has a wonderful smooth jog that anyone would love, except of course to our riders that try to post to it! Lillja's jog is great a building strong leg muscles since she doesn't provide much "lift" to assist in the rise! Lillja is a very kind horse and usually the first to notice when "treats" are opened. The slightest sound of a crinkling bag and she's already drooling....If you would like to be Lillja's sponsor, see the information below. Nitah is the "new kid on the block" looking forward to beginning her career as a therapy horse in the fall of 2009. Nitah loves the attention people bring and loves to please! She has a wonderful forward walk with great movement. If you would like to sponsor Nitah please see the information below. Mista was born here at the ranch and two years ago blessed us with a beautiful filly. As her daughter prepares for her career here at the center, a six year process, mom is ready to become a therapy horse in the fall of 2009. Mista too is a very smooth mover with a very smooth trot and lovely canter. If you would like to be Mista's sponsor, please see the information below. Magnus is learning to drive! Magnus is a powerful gelding with a very gentle nature. Magnus will be ready to teach what he has learned when the center begins our therapy driving in the fall of 2011. If you would like to sponsor Magnus, see the information below. Brun Venn, Nikolina, and Britlese are the center's up and coming therapy horses. At age two they experience some disciplinary ground training but are still allowed to spend most of their day frolicking in the pasture building muscle and engaging in social horse behavior. At Chehalem Mountain Therapy Riding Center, Inc we recognize the value of all of our animal friends. Below are some of the residents you may encounter while you are here.
Mascot Melody is our just barely one year old resident mini donkey. She may announce your arrival with her melodic bray and run to greet you, or just quietly insist that you interact with her by pushing your hand with her nose. At her young age, she has already figured out that we humans can be easily trained with the right motivation and seeks out hugs and pats from visitors. Blackie the hen is unassuming and quiet compared to her husband Robert. RRRRRobert the RRRRRRooster makes his presence known throughout the day with his best imitation of the "Get Smart" theme...RRR RRR RRRRRRR RR. Ever since he has "discovered" his voice, he enjoys using it, something we encourage here at the ranch. Hershey, a true "my size pony" in a lovely chocolate colored suit, is a gentle loving mini horse that loves to be groomed and patted. Playing "beauty shop" at day camp, Hershey loves to be fussed over. The brushing and braiding and trimming is something he looks forward to...even though he is a guy. Dancer and Prancer, two overly friendly goat sisters also love attention and will compete for that first pat when you approach their gate. If you would like to sponsor one of the horses above, first of all, thank you for your willingness to make a difference. From foot care, feed, veterinary expenses, caring for our equine partners can be costly and we thank you for your generosity. As a way to keep costs down for our clients we are always looking for innovative ways to keep our center thriving. Sponsoring a horse ensures that the projected yearly expense for the care of that particular horse is taken care of and the center can focus growing other areas of our ministry. It takes a special horse to be a Therapy Horse as there are stringent requirements that a horse needs to pass before being considered for their training and important role in Therapy Riding at Chehalem Mountain Therapy Riding Center Inc.
Chehalem Mountain Therapy Riding Center Inc uses The Norwegian Fjord Horse exclusively in our riding programs. This distinguished breed characteristically possesses a gentle nature and a calm disposition which is necessary when working consistently around unfamiliar and unusual stimuli.
